With the last few documents being entered into the LEED rating system for Homes, the 2009 Solar House will attain its LEED certification at the Platinum level. With the final placement at the university, after its competition in 2009, the house was recommissioned and the work for getting the LEED certification began.

A big thank you to the Solar House Team and especially Paul Jensen, who began compiling all the documents and necessary work to get the house certified to the platinum level.

With a little help from OSE3, the 2009 house was able to get the final work necessary to complete its goal. We at OSE3 are proud to support the first LEED for Homes certified building here at Missouri S&T.

The Institute of Affordable Transportation (IAT) is a non-profit organization devoted to developing high-quality, low-cost transportation for third-world countries. This involves a class of transportation known as a Basic Utility Vehicle (BUV).  BUV's are designed to provide mobility, freedom and economic hope to people in rural areas of developing countries. As part of the humanitarian vision, the IAT has involved educational institutions to design and develop BUV's with the objective of engaging young engineering and technology talent.
Following the Missouri S&T 2009-2011 EcoCAR, a fuel cell plug-in hybrid electric vehicle, this low cost mobile test bed will be developed at the EcoCAR R&D electric vehicle development garage. This facility's capabilities are currently being expanded under existing Missouri S&T/Air Force Research Lab contract "Advanced Military Installations That Integrate Renewable Energy and Advanced Energy Storage Technologies".
Great job to Dr. Sheffield and his team on this exciting project. We look forward to getting a drive around campus!

Dr. Daniel Oerther, the John A. and Susan Mathes Chair of Environmental Engineering commented on the Solar Decathlon in the November issue of Architect Magazine.  Discussing the advanced technologies of his home (the S&T 2007 entry) Dr. Oerther explains the need to "make choices with intention".  For more on this article go to:  http://www.architectmagazine.com/education-projects/the-decathlon-is-over-now-what.aspx

Planning for the S&T Geothermal System is well underway.  With over 100 miles of piping (just for the well!) this project will have a significant campus impact over the next 3 years.  For more information check out the Physical Facilities website:  http://designconstruction.mst.edu/geothermal.html

At the 2011 Battery Show we maxed out at...9!  As part of a growing partnership with Bitrode, Magna E-Car brought Tony Arnold and a grad student to the show.  Three days of informative seminars covering topics like EV's and the smart grid were great.  However, the highlight of the trip was definitely a tour of the new Magna E-Car facility with general manager Bob Galyen.  Contact the OSE3 to learn more!   Thumbnail image for Battery Show 2011.JPG

WASHINGTON - The average family spends $2,200 a year on energy bills, nearly half of which goes to heating and cooling. With winter approaching and Americans heading indoors, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) Energy Star program is offering easy energy saving tips that increase household efficiency while helping Americans save money and stay warm.

EPA recommends taking the following steps this winter:
